Description:
DiX.9 / 80m2 apartment in the historical center of Montpellier
Set in the heart of Montpellier’s historic center, this 80 m² apartment underwent a complete transformation, redefining its spatial identity while preserving the character of the original stone structure. The project focuses on contrasts, between old and new, softness and depth, quiet neutrality and unexpected chromatic accents.
At the core of the renovation stands a large bespoke living room library, entirely crafted in folded plasterboard. Sculptural yet discreet, it frames the space and acts as the architectural backbone of the apartment. The flooring has been redesigned with oak laid in a classic point de Hongrie pattern, creating visual rhythm and timeless warmth.
In the kitchen, a dramatic three-meter-high wall of deep black zellige tiles becomes the focal point, reflecting light and anchoring the otherwise bright and minimal volume. This glossy vertical surface dialogues with softer textures throughout the home, ensuring a refined balance between statement and subtlety.
Color plays a structural role in the design. The long corridor, painted in a gentle, desaturated green, creates a calm transition, enhanced by the presence of exposed stone on one side. A curved acoustic wall sweeps along the passage, creating movement while absorbing sound, and gently guiding the perspective towards the living spaces. Throughout the apartment, materials and tones layer to craft a peaceful yet expressive atmosphere.
Both bathrooms continue this interplay of texture and color, each defined by handcrafted zellige tiles and vibrant saturated pops: coral, emerald, and soft pastels. Light reveals the imperfections of the tiles, bringing depth and a human touch to the minimalist compositions.
A fully custom children’s bedroom completes the project, designed as a playful and functional space. Three built-in bunk beds, integrated shelving, and hidden storage create a compact, joyful environment tailored to the needs of a young family.
This renovation weaves together heritage and contemporary sensibilities, natural textures and bold statements, creating a living space defined by quiet elegance, craftsmanship, and curated color.
