Description:
Le 19ème / A Contemporary Brunch Café Inspired by 19th-Century Montpellier
Le 19ème is a brunch café located in the historic center of Montpellier, designed as a contemporary reinterpretation of 19th-century aesthetics. The project explores the dialogue between past and present, blending classical iconography with modern spatial strategies to create a warm, immersive, and culturally rooted atmosphere.
The concept begins with a desire to reconnect the space to the artistic heritage of Montpellier. The ceiling becomes the central canvas of this narrative, where large-scale wallpapers recreate three iconic works by 19th-century Montpellier-born painter Alexandre Cabanel: L’Ange Déchu, La Naissance de Vénus, and Pandora’s Box. These reproduced frescoes bring a dramatic, celestial presence to the space, transforming the café into a contemporary salon where art envelops the visitor from above.
Curved lines shape the architectural language of the interior, softening transitions and creating a sense of movement reminiscent of classical ornamentation, yet expressed through modern forms. Custom Orac Décors 3D wall treatments add depth and texture, producing sculptural surfaces that reinterpret the decorative richness of the era without falling into pastiche.
A carefully composed palette of colors and lighting completes the environment. Warm tones, soft shadows, and accent lighting create an intimate and inviting ambiance, while subtle contemporary touches keep the space fresh, accessible, and anchored in today’s café culture.
Le 19ème is a place where historical memory meets contemporary design, a poetic dialogue between Cabanel’s legacy, the curves of classical architecture, and the sensibilities of modern hospitality. The result is a unique interior that feels both nostalgic and unexpectedly current, offering guests an experience that is visual, cultural, and deeply atmospheric.
